33rd of Oulu's "100 acts": Four Jussi award nominations for Miss Blue Jeans

Julkaistu 28.01.2013

Miss Blue Jeans, a film partly shot in Oulu, has received four Jussi Award nominations. An achievement like that is definitely an 'act'; after all, the Jussi Awards are the “Finnish Academy Awards” for the best pictures of the year. Originally premiering in the summer of 2012, the movie, which offers an unpretentious look at Oulu in the 1970s, is once again in the spotlight thanks to the nominations, and is providing good publicity for Oulu in the process. The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same title by Kauko Röyhkä (Like, 2003).

Miss Blue Jeans is a humorous depiction of one man’s growth, music and true love. At the same time, it is a story of how punk and new wave rock music arrived in the north. The film highlights the lives of young people in 70s Oulu and a turning point in city culture, with dialog that features authentic Oulu dialects.

Filming originally began in May 2011, with shooting taking place in Helsinki in addition to Oulu. The city of Oulu supported the movie with a substantial amount of funding.

Fourth place in number of Jussi Award nominations

This has been a historical year for Finnish film. In 2012, Finnish movie theatres saw a grand total of 39 Finnish premieres. As a result, this year also saw a wide range of Jussi Award nominations. Miss Blue Jeans was nominated in four categories and is also in joint fourth place in the total number of nominations.

Most notably, Miss Blue Jeans is one of the nominees for Best Finnish Film of 2012. The film’s other nominations were for Best Script, Costume Design and Make-up Design. The winners will be decided by the members of Filmiaura by closed ballot. The winners will be announced at the Jussi award ceremony, which will be broadcast live from the Cable Factory in Helsinki by MTV3 on Sunday, February 3, starting from 7.30 PM.
