Taiwan-Finland Precision Health Seminar

  • Alkaa: 20.05.2022

In Taiwan, precision health has been listed as one of the six core strategic industries by Tsai In-Wen’s administration since 2020. The government sets its sight on Taiwan becoming an international hub for innovative biomedical R&D and a world leader in precision health. To achieve this ambitious target, the government plans to invest nearly NT 10 billion to promote the six core strategic industries from 2021-2025.

Taiwan is a perfect place to develop precision health. Firstly, the 23 million population in Taiwan has a relatively homogeneous genetic background. Also, Taiwan has a comprehensive national health insurance (NHI) system that has been collecting digital medical records for 25 years. The resourceful health records from NHI system are the key driver for the development of precision health. Last but not least, Taiwan boasts a strong ICT industry as the bedrock for precision medicine and has excellent R&D in information science.

Finland is also in the forefront of data-driven precision health. As one of the first countries to compile social and welfare data in digital registries, and with a 100% population penetration in electronic health records, Finland's digital health data is globally unique when it comes to their scope and depth.
In addition to unique health data repositories, several other factors make Finland an attractive location for developing innovations in the field of data-driven solutions: broad-based skills of highly educated people; people's trust in public authorities; a tradition of public–private partnership as well as forward-looking, innovation friendly legislation; strong technology competence and world-class innovation.

In light of the similarities between Finland and Taiwan in terms of precision health development, Finland Trade Center and the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Promotion Office (BPIPO) co-organize the ‘’Taiwan-Finland Precision Health Seminar’’ to invite companies from both sides to present their solutions and build networks. The purpose of the event is to create a platform to facilitate the development for precision health through international collaborations between Finland and Taiwan.

Objective: The seminar aims to build up an open dialogue and create opportunities for mutual collaborations between Finland and Taiwan in terms of precision health.
