World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 1955 the organization is known for holding the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest.

Another primary objective of the organization is to support professional press photography on a wide international scale, to stimulate developments in photojournalism, encourage the transfer of knowledge, help develop high professional standards in photojournalism and promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information.

The annual competition has a standard procedure for selecting the best photographs. The World Press Photo 11 showcases the best photographs taken in 2010. Out of the nine categories one photograph was selected as the winner of the competition. 108,059 photos were submitted by 5,691 photographers of 125 different nationalities. They were judged by an independent jury made up of professionals in the field from across the world. The prizewinning photographs were assembled into this traveling exhibition, which is visited by around 2.5 million people in 100 locations in some 45 countries every year. The yearbook presenting all prizewinning entries is published annually in seven languages.

The exhibition is a great way to see some of the most beautiful, sad or thought provoking photography from newspapers, news agencies and photographers in the world.

The world press photo competition is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT. For the Oulu exhibition the biggest sponsor is TEPSC from Taiwan. TEPSC pursues clean propulsion technologies and develops environmental-friendly products for power and energy systems.
