The construction of the Raahe goldmine has begun. The mine should be operational next year and is expected to yield nearly 4,000 kilos of gold annually.
The gold fields begin about 20 kilometres inland from Raahe. The construction of the mine at Laivakangas, Raahe, employs about 150 people. Approximately 20 kilometres of road and 30 kilometres of piping will be built at the opencast mine as well as 35 buildings, of which the concentrating plant is already under construction.
‘At present, we are building the foundations for the concentrating plant,’ explains Peter Finnäs, Explorations Manager at Nordic Mines. ‘The goal is to produce the first gold bullions by next summer. We are creating plenty of new, permanent jobs,’ says Finnäs. ‘The demand for gold by industry is increasing, and the company expects operations to continue for over ten years.’
‘Finland is on its way to becoming an important, if not the most important, producer of gold in Europe,’ Finnäs continues. ‘Within a few years, we will have five to six goldmines in operation in Finland,’ according to Finnäs.
