Bluetooth marketing coming to downtown Oulu - 29.06.2010

Bluetooth marketing for cell phones is set to be tried out in downtown Oulu. This marketing ploy will be undertaken by the IT company Verkkoasema, which will be utilizing the Access Point 3201 device, launched by Espoo-based company Bluegiga Oy.

Marketing will be done by means of AP3201 transmitters, installed in downtown stores. These devices will send lunch offers and other information to the cell phones of store patrons.
Bluetooth has been rarely used for marketing even though it is among the standard wireless communication tools of cell phones. Heavy toll on battery life as well as viruses have reduced its use. However, very few Bluetooth viruses have lately been found, while improved batteries have also reduced power consumption.

In Oulu, Bluetooth marketing will be applied in, for instance, downtown restaurants, where patrons may receive lunch and dinner offers on their cell phones.

The Bluetooth transmitter should be visibly placed in order for the receivers to be able to receive messages, since the range on these devices is around 50 meters. Phones are not required to have any additional features to Bluetooth readiness.
Bluetooth marketing will be introduced this week on Rotuaari. In the future, marketing may be aimed at various target groups by targeting messages on the basis of cell phone models.
