Oulu taking the lead in 3D Internet development - 11.06.2010
The Realxtend web project launched in Oulu three years ago is developing into a worldwide business. The project in question is a web server and browser operating in the virtual world. At the same time it is a strong candidate for use as a web 3D platform.
“The project employs open source that anyone is free to use. It is also a platform on which everyone can build their own application,” says Jani Pirkola, Research Coordinator at
the CIE (Center for Internet Excellence).
Realxtend has been developed by companies such as
Ludocraft,
Evocativi and
Playsign, and others. The average surfer will benefit from Realextend, for example, through virtual meetings and educational institutions, before it extends to home use.
The web 3D markets are expanding and the sector’s business models are right now taking shape. There are no standards in the 3D world at present that companies are investing in.
“We’re now waiting for a universal 3D platform that companies believe in,” says Pirkola. He predicts that 3D technology will break through as early as 2013.
Just now Realxtend is at the experimental stage. The first true marketable version is anticipated at the turn of the year.
