Logistic hub
The hub of Northern Finland, Oulu is an active, business-oriented city of nearly 200,000 inhabitants with huge business potential spanning the surrounding areas from Northern Scandinavia to the Barents region. Oulu is only a couple of hours' drive from the strategic markets of Sweden and Russia.
The Oulu airport is the second busiest in Finland, and it is only one hour's flight from Helsinki. The airlines flying to Oulu are Finnair, Blue1, airBaltic and Norwegian. The airport is currently being expanded and developed into a key hub for airBaltic, which will significantly increase the direct international flight traffic to Oulu.
The port of Oulu opens sea route connections all over the world, and the railway network connects the city with all of Finland. The four ports of Oulu are visited by about 600 cargo ships a year, mainly serving the forest industry and unit load transportation. The ports of Oulu are the key sea channel from the northern Gulf of Bothnia to mainland Europe. The planned improvements of the railway network will enhance both cargo and passenger transportation.
Thanks to Finland's second largest multidisciplinary university and the numerous international businesses, Oulu is categorised one of the most significant technology clusters in the world. Oulu hosts a nodal point for electricity and datacommunications, securing fibre connections via different operators, as well as the Funet trunk network covering the IP connections from Finnish university locations to global research networks and the Internet.
