Major projects
Nuclear power
Fennovoima's nuclear power plant investment will be implemented in Simo or Pyhäjoki. The Finnish parliament has made a decision in principle concerning the investment, Fennovoima will decide the plant location in June 2011, and the first construction phases – clearance and infrastructure work – will commence in 2012. Affiliated facilities, such as piers, maintenance, storage and accommodation buildings will be constructed in 2013-2015. The actual power plant construction is scheduled for 2015-2020, and the plant will start generating electricity in 2020.
The estimated costs of this project total approximately AUR 6 billion. The employment effect of the construction phase will amount to 30,000-35,000 person-years. The construction of the nuclear power plant will take 8–9 years, followed by the operating period of 60–80 years and demolition period of 10 years. All in all, this is a project of a decade.
The nuclear power plant investment will have permanent effects on the industry structure and regional economy. It will secure safe, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly energy supply in northern Finland.
Oulu will greatly benefit from the project, thanks to its location and position. Part of the labour force – engineering and administrative staff in particular – will be living in Oulu. The project will also entail challenges for Oulu; for example, the increased migration from Finland and abroad must be taken into account in the provision of municipal and other services. .
