Cleaner world with cleantech from Oulu

Purifying exhaust fumes in Hong Kong, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Hungary, cleaning wastewaters in beach resorts, generating environmentally friendly energy in France – all these applications feature environmental technology developed in Oulu. World-class catalyst research has been conducted in Oulu since the 1980s, and the results can be seen all over the world. ´

Environmental technology, i.e. Cleantech, seeks to minimise the environmental impacts of production processes. The aim is to produce technology that entails a minimal burden on the environment and saves raw material and energy. Curbing carbon dioxide emissions is one of the most important goals in this field.

Cleantech in Oulu:

  • More than 60 companies, most with international aspirations
  • Turnover nearly EUR 400 million
  • Approximately 1,500 employees
  • Special areas of expertise: catalyst technology, processing and recycling of electronic waste, pure energy generation

Incorporating the solid ICT expertise

The solid ICT expertise forms a sturdy foundation for advanced cleantech development in Oulu. Wireless technology is applied to such targets as the remote control of wind farms and combustion plants, and the mobile control rooms of waterworks. Systems for the field measurement of the quantity and quality of water are also developed in Oulu.

The University of Oulu and local companies have conducted extensive research and co-operation to benefit the environment for the long run.

Development work is carried out to develop industry branch-specific solutions for the treatment of circulation and exit gases containing carbon dioxide.

Renewable energy plays a major role in northern Ostrobothnia. Investments in wind power are planned in the Oulunkaari and Raahe areas. In addition, the mining industry offers significant business opportunities for cleantech companies.
